Madsen Family Cellars 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon, Horse Heaven Hills, $30
Rating: Recommended

Review: Here marks the first sizable vintage for this couple in Lacey, Wash., and the primary fruit source for this release – Destiny Ridge Vineyard – shows they mean business. A dense profile of black cherries, prunes, allspice, cigar box, green tea and eucalyptus makes for a mouth-filling wine, but the finish of youthful tannins and Baker’s chocolate should reward patience.

Wine Press Northwest: Spring 2010 issue

March 14, 2010 Madsen Family Cellars participated in the “Bags and Bottles” event to honor and raise funds for Gilda’s Club Seattle , a group providing support for those affected by cancer. The Seattle blog called “Seattlest ” published a review of the function on their Arts and Events page March 15th. Of the 32 wineries pouring wine at the function, only two were singled out for mention:

“32 local wineries were present offering shopper’s(sic) a taste of their latest selections including Sojen Cellar’s(sic) fantastic Cabernet Blend and Madsen Family Cellar’s(sic) delightfully smooth Merlot.

“Entreés: One of Cicada’s signature entrees is oven-roasted Northwest quail (farm-raised) with chipotle and cherry sauce, served with roasted yams. Roberson is excited about cabernet franc, a red wine with which many wine novices might not be familiar. “I find cabernet franc to be more versatile for food pairing – and often to have more depth and nuance – than similar cabernet sauvignons in the same price range,” he said. His choice for the quail is Madsen Family Cellars’ Cabernet Franc*, Washington state. The winery is located in the Olympia area and sources grapes from around the state. Roberson said the wine “possesses the telltale notes of baking spice and pepper on a long finish of well-integrated oak, and is beautiful with any small game bird such as quail.”

Dana Madsen operates his winery just outside of Olympia, Washington crafting a wide variety of red and white wines. His 2009 Chardonnay was fermented in new French oak barrels and aged in stainless steel. Well received by our tasting panel, it shows aromas of floral perfume, melon, lychee and pear, leading to a palate of melon, pear and citrus with a crisp finish perfect to accompany lighter meats and appetizers.

2008 Madsen Family Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon

A Cabernet Sauvignon Dry Red Table wine from
Horse Heaven Hills, Columbia Valley, Washington, USA

The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon is a glass-coating opaque purple color. Aromas of cedar, Asian spices, incense, violets, and black currants inform the nose of a ripe, savory, nicely proportioned wine that conceals enough structure to evolve for 3-4 years. This solid effort will deliver prime drinking from 2013 to 2023.

2008 Madsen Family Cellars Othello

A Proprietary Blend Dry Red Table wine from
Columbia Valley, Washington, USA

Madsen Family’s 2008 Othello is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and the balance Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This full-bodied, powerful blend has plenty of muscle but comes up slightly short on complexity. Give it 2-3 years of additional cellaring (which could add nuance) and drink it from 2013 to 2020.
